USCG Captain License Requirements
To captain a charter boat in the United States, you need a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) captain's license. The most common license for charter operators is the OUPV (Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels), commonly known as a “six-pack” license.
Basic Requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Have 360 days of sea service experience
- Pass a drug test and physical examination
- Pass a background check
- Complete an approved captain's course
For larger vessels or more passengers, you may need a Master License (25, 50, or 100-ton).
